De Leo & Liautier Claim Italian Titles

22 Mar 2021

Gregorio De Leo has won the Italian International Amateur Championship. The Italian player led from the outset at Acaya Golf Club, carding a five-under-par 66 in round one to 120-player international field.

De Leo, who was 171st in the World Amateur Golf Ranking heading into the event, matched his first-round performance on day two to reach 10-under-par at the halfway stage, sharing the lead with Italian compatriot, Marco Florioli.

A third-round 69 (-2) gave De Leo a two-stroke advantage over Massimiliano Campigli heading into the fourth and final round.

Players faced difficult scoring conditions on the final day. Switzerland’s Nicola Gerhardsen, who would eventually claim third place on -2, was the only player to break par.

This meant a final round 73 (+1) was enough for De Leo to claim victory, seven strokes ahead of Marco Florioli.

In the Nations’ trophy, a three-player team competition which totals the two best stroke play scores from each player over the first three days, the gold medal also went to Italy.

Gregorio de Leo, Andrea Romano and Luca Nicolas Fallotico claimed the first place prize with a total of 409 (-17) for Italy Team 1. France’s first team, which featured Paul Margolis, Tom Vaillant, and Martin Couvra, finished in second place eight strokes behind.

At the Italian International Ladies’ Championship, held at Golf Club Parco De’ Medici in Rome, Charlotte Liautier emerged as the champion of the 120 competing players.

The French player found herself in a tie for 24th position after round one, having carded a four-over-par 76, although successive rounds of 69 (-3) in rounds two and three moved her to two-under-par and to the top of the leaderboard.

Heading in the final round, Liautier was just one stroke ahead of compatriot, Constance Fouillet, and just two strokes ahead of Italian pair, Francesca Fiorellini and Carolina Melgrati.

A fourth round 71 (-1) brought Liautier, who was ranked 273rd in the World Amateur Golf Ranking before the event, to a total of three-under-par for the week, enough to claim the title by two strokes over Francesca Fiorellini and Carolina Melgrati, who both finished on -1.

The runners-up were able to claim some silverware of their own in the Nations’ Trophy however, claiming the top spot for Italy Team 1 alongside former Vagliano Trophy player, Alessia Nobilio with a total of 430 (-2).

Ines Arches, Clemence Martin, and Constance Fouillet finished second in the team event for France Team 2, four strokes behind on 434 (+2).
