Earlier this month, the World Handicap Authority (The R&A and USGA) and the EGA hosted a course rating seminar for European national golf associations.
Course rating is a fundamental part of the World Handicap System (WHS) which allows playing handicaps to be fairly calculated based on a golf course’s relative difficulty.
84 delegates representing 24 different countries attended the seminars, which were held from 3 to 5 May at Le Golf National near Paris. The seminar started with a session for beginners and ended with the calibration for experienced raters.
The main objective of the seminars, which were held for the first time in five year due to Covid restrictions, is to help ensure consistent application of the WHS Course Rating System around the world. The seminars were also a chance to discuss future course rating modernization and changes coming up, as well as train less experienced course raters.
“It was a pleasure to see such strong participation at the first course rating seminar held in Europe since 2018” said Richard Cau, Chairman of the EGA Handicapping & Course Rating Committee.
“It is vital for the success of the WHS that course rating methods are consistent across Europe and the world, and I believe these seminars are an excellent and effective tool to help achieve this.”
