The European Team Championships for Golfers with Disability has been won by France after a closely-competed three days in Portugal. The Quinta Do Lago resort hosted the nine four-man teams of the biennial competition in its first year being sanctioned by the EGA.
The French Team emerged victorious on the final day after overcoming a four-shot deficit to the Spanish Team following the Day 1 foursomes and Day 2 greensomes. The top two teams both finished with combined stroke play scores of 551 (+47), with the non-counting highest singles team score deciding the tie in favour of the French.
Charles-Henri Quelin, led the way for France. The 2017 French ‘Handigolf’ Champion shot a level-par 72 on the final day, which included two birdies and no bogeys around the South Course’s challenging back-nine.
The defending champions, Sweden, could only manage fourth place this year. Their 562 (+58) total left them four strokes behind the third-placed English Team.
The event took place in parallel with the European Nation’s Cup for Golfers with Disability, a net stableford competition with the same three-day format. 2015 bronze medallists, Denmark, claimed the trophy by ten-points, with the defending-champion Spanish team finishing as runners-up once more.
