Heath and Nobilio Lead in Paris

20 Jul 2022

England's Charlotte Heath and Italy's Alessia Nobilio lead the European Ladies' Amateur Championship after Round 1.

144 players representing 35 countries are competing at Golf de Saint-Germain for this year's European Ladies' Amateur title.

The top ranked players in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) got underway first in the morning, in cool and wet conditions.

Ashley Lau looked like she may set the bar in the early stages. Teeing off in the 2nd group of the day, the Malaysian was six-under-par through 11 holes. Two bogeys and a double-bogey on the 18th meant she had to settle for a score of 69 (-3), leaving her in an 12-way tie for 7th place.

Charlotte Heath was two-over par through five holes, after a double-bogey on the par-3 5th. A bounce-back birdie on the 6th, and five birdies in a row from the 9th, helped the English player to the top of the leaderboard with a 67 (-5).

Alessia Nobilio was the only other player that could match the score. The italian carded seven birdies and two bogeys for a 67 of her own.

Four players sit just one shot back in a tie for 3rd on -4, Brigitte Thibault (CAN), Euphemie Rhodes (ENG), Beth Coulter (IRL) and Carolina Melgrati (ITA).

The highest ranked player in the field, Emma Spitz (AUT) is among the 13 players on -3. As are two home hopefuls, Carla de Troia (FRA) and Gala Dumez (FRA). The former will look to make the most of her knowledge of the course, being a member at Golf de Saint-Germain.

De Troia is not the only club member in the field. After a late cancellation due to injury, Eugénie Varet, who was 40th on the reserve list and volunteering in the morning as a ball spotter, was able to fill the spot with just an hour's notice.

The afternoon wave had to deal with tricky conditions, including heavy rain and a 45-minute suspension of play due to the risk of lightning. That didn't stop Christina Thouber (DEN), who was also a late addition to the start list, from putting herself in contention with a 69 (-3).
