HUMPHREYS AND SKOGEN WIN 2017 EUROPEAN YOUNG MASTERS

30 Jul 2017

From 27 to 29 July, 2017, the two best girls and boys from 30 nations competed at Oslo Golf Club, Norway, for the title of the European Young Masters.

Last year’s bronze medallist, Lily-May Humphreys won the girls' event with a total of 214 strokes, 2-under par. After an opening round of 69 strokes, followed by 74 on the second day, Humphreys teed off in the second last girls’ group on Saturday. After a good start with birdies on holes two and three, the 15-year old from Essex dropped three shots including her only double bogey of the week on hole four, followed by a bogey on five. However, the English talent, who recently became one of the youngest-ever English Women’s Amateur Champions, recovered well adding two more birdies on holes eight and 15 to sign for 71, 1-under par, to win by one shot.

Silver was awarded to Italy’s Maria Vittoria Corbi who posted rounds of 71, 74 and 70. Third place was shared by Annabel Fuller (ENG) and overnight leaders Elena Moosmann (SWI) and Lauren Holmey (NED). Owing to the best round of the last day, a 68, Fuller won the bronze medal.

In the boys’ competition, Bard Bjornevik Skogen from Norway took home the gold medal with a total of 206 strokes, 10-under par. Sitting in second place after Days 1 and 2, with rounds of 67 and 70, Skogen posted a final round of 69, 3-under, including an eagle on hole two, to secure the title by two shots.

France’s Nicolas Muller won the silver medal with rounds of 73, 67, 68, and a total of 208 strokes. Norway’s Mikkel Antonsen, who posted the lowest round of the tournament, a fabulous 9-under 63 on Day 1, added rounds of 73 and 72 to match Muller’s total and receive the bronze medal. Antonsen recorded a double bogey on the driveable Par-4 17th hole to miss out on the silver.

The Nations’ Cup, for which the three best out of four results of each day count, was won by England. It is England’s first team victory since 2013 and they finished on 12-under, beating Norway by five shots, while Italy took third place, two shots further back.

With their great performances at the European Young Masters, Humphreys, Corbi, Skogen and Muller have secured a spot in the four-player team that will represent the European Golf Association at the 2017 Asia-Pacific Junior Championship end of August.
