Ireland wins 2016 European Senior Ladies' Team Championship

Ireland have won the European Senior Ladies’ Team Championship at Sierra GC in Poland.

The Irish ladies beat Belgium in the final 3-2. 
Sheena McElroy and Carol Wickham secured the first point for Ireland in the foursomes match against Marie-Anne Toussaint and Anne Joris, before Suzanne Corcoran impressed with a 9-7 victory against Marianne Trussart. Laurette Vanderlinden and Sylvie van Molle collected Belgium’s two points with their wins by 3-2 and 1 hole, against Laura Webb and Gertie McMullen, respectively. Mary Sheehy prevailed on the 21st hole over Annick Riff to secure the vital point for her team to lift the trophy for the second time after their victory in 2013. 

After Ireland won their quarter-final against Switzerland 3.5-1.5, winning three and halving one of their matches, they repeated this performance against Sweden in the semi-final. 

On the way to their silver medal, Belgium beat England 3-2 in the quarter-final and Spain 3-2 in the semi-final. 

Top-qualifier England took home the bronze medal after overcoming Italy 3.5-1.5 in the match for third place.
