14 Sep 2020

The European Seniors' Championship, played at Hossegor GC, France, brought a Spanish victory in each category. María de Orueta won the Ladies' event in a tight struggle with María Castillo Dolagaray (ESP) and Christine Petit Martin (FRA), and Jacobo Cestino, won the Men’s.

María de Orueta is a former Spanish lady international and a former winner of the European Senior Ladies' Championship in 2015. She was also the recipient of a bronze medal in 2013 and of silver medals in 2014 and 2018. She won with an aggregate of + 8 (76-73-72), one stroke ahead of Maria Castillo Dolagaray from Spain (silver medal with 71- 76- 75) and Christine Petit Martin from France (bronze medal with 72-75-75). Christine had also won a bronze medal in 2019. All three players were in the final group, and Christine was leading by one on the 16th tee. Maria Castillo Dolagaray, the tournament leader after two rounds, had a poor front nine, but came back with birdies at 16 and 17, each time by chipping in!

In the men's championship, Jacobo Cestino from Spain won with +3 (74-72-70), one stroke ahead of Pierre Carpentier from France (+4) and two ahead of Rainer Gödeke from Germany (+5). Jacobo is the second Spanish player to win the event after Miguel Preysler in 2006.
