Wiedemeyer and Ji Complete Continent of Europe St Andrews Trophy Team

16 Jul 2024

The 2024 Continent of Europe St Andrews Trophy team is now complete.

Tim Wiedemeyer (GER) and Jerry Ji (NED) have been selected to join seven previously announced players, and captain, Carlos de Corral (ESP), at Royal Porthcawl next week as the team looks to win back The St Andrews Trophy from GB&I.

Selection to play in the biennial match, for male amateur golfers, recognizes the players’ outstanding achievements in the amateur game.

THE TEAM:

Bastien Amat (FRA)

Pablo Ereño Perez (ESP)

Filip Jacubčík (CZE)

Jerry Ji (NED)

Luis Masaveu (ESP)

Jacob Skov Olesen (DEN)

Richard Teder (EST)

Lars Van Der Vight (NED)

Tim Wiedemeyer (GER)

Tim Wiedemeyer will play in the St Andrews Trophy for the first time next week, but is no stranger to playing for Continent of Europe teams. The German became the first CoE player to win the Jacques Léglise Trophy three-times last year, and in doing so became the team’s top scorer in the event, with 9 points from three appearances.

Wiedemeyer recently showed his good form at the European Amateur Championship, where he led at the halfway stage. After a late charge in the final round he also led playing the 72nd hole, but two bad swings cost him a chance at the European title. The 19-year-old still earned a European medal two-weeks later, helping Germany to 3rd place at the European Amateur Team Championship in Italy.

Jerry Ji, in contrast to Wiedemeyer as the youngest, will be one of the older players on the team next week. The 24-year-old famously finished runner-up in the 2018 European Amateur Championship, one shot behind Ryder Cup star, Nicolai Hojgaard. That year Ji also represented the Continent of Europe in the Jacques Léglise Trophy. The Dutchman helped his team to their highest ever finish in the European Amateur Team Championship last week, dominating the stroke play qualifying and then winning four out of his five matches to earn the silver medals. He'll join teammate, Lars Van Der Vight, in sporting European colours next week.

The nine players will take on a talented team of players from Great Britain & Ireland, recently announced by The R&A.

ABOUT THE ST ANDREWS TROPHY

Image

The St Andrews Trophy is a biennial match played between nine-player teams of amateur male golfers from the Continent of Europe and Great Britain & Ireland.

The match takes place over two days, with four foursomes matches on both mornings, eight singles matches on the afternoon of the first day, and nine singles matches on the afternoon of the second day. With 25 total points on offer, 13 points are needed to secure victory.

The contest is jointly organized by the European Golf Association and The R&A. The EGA selects the Continent of Europe team, while the GB&I team is chosen by The R&A. Identical matches between the two regions also exist for women (Vagliano Trophy), boys (Jacques Léglise Trophy), and girls (Junior Vagliano Trophy). The latter two of which will be contested at West Lancashire Golf Club in England at the end of August.

The match was first played in 1956, with this year’s edition being the 34th between the two teams. Despite a general GB&I dominance in the match since its inauguration, the last three editions have seen one win from either team and one match halved, suggesting a tight encounter in Wales at the end of next month.

A number of high-profile players have represented both sides in the match, including Rory McIlroy, Francesco Molinari, Robert Macintyre, José María Olazábal, Shane Lowry, Luke Donald, Padraig Harrington, Henrik Stenson, Sergio Garcia and many more.

Typically played in even years, the match will be played again in 2025 at Puerta de Hierro in Spain as part of a move to odd years.
